COLUMBUS
- After the first day of the Class AAAAA state tournament, one Gwinnett
County school is hoping to change history, while the other is hoping
history repeats itself.
The former is Mill Creek, which finds
itself in the winner's bracket final after Day 1 for the third straight
season after beating Union Grove 8-1 and Greenbrier 1-0 on Friday at
the rain-soaked South Commons Softball Complex.
The last two
times haven't worked out so well for the Hawks (28-6), who have wound
up losing their next two games each of the previous two seasons.

COLUMBUS
- Mill Creek has one more climb to reach the summit at the Class AAAAA
state softball tournament, but the Hawks conquered a major peak on
Friday in the winner's bracket finals.
After bowing out in two
straight games in the same position each of the last two seasons, Mill
Creek finally fought its way into the championship round with a 1-0
victory over East Coweta at the South Commons Softball Complex.
The
Hawks (29-6) will take on the winner of an elimination game between
East Coweta and Cherokee with two chances to win one game for their
first state title beginning this afternoon at 1.

COLUMBUS
- A few extra steps on its path to what had been an elusive Class AAAAA
state championship were not about to deter the Mill Creek softball team.
After
seeing their first chance at the title evaporate with one out to get,
the Hawks got back up and scored twice in the first extra inning, and
then held on for a 3-2 victory over East Coweta on Saturday at the
South Commons Softball Complex.
The title was particularly sweet
for Mill Creek's (30-6) eight-member senior class, which had gone
through near misses each of the last two seasons, with the Hawks
finishing third each time.
